Busy December

Thu Dec 10, 2009, 5:44 PM
About 358/2 days

ダメだ

シオン

また3人でアイスを食べよう

[Japanese Translation] No! Xion! The three of us will eat ice cream again!

[English version] No! Xion… Who else will I have ice cream with?

I was reading Semokan's journal yesterday. It was about the apparent disparity in dialogue between the Japanese version and English translated version of 358/2 days.

So I went to take a look at the two videos and did my own translation. I actually thought the English version sounded quite dumb and kinda childish. Roxas is supposed to be clueless but he's not that stupid, right? He sounds like a 4 years old kid…

SOY2010

Slyethermit09 and I are getting a booth for SOY 2010. It's at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, 30 January 2010. We are collating items to be done for that event but it would be mostly KH related things. Might slip in APH and TRC if we have enough time.

But right now, the two of us are rushing to complete our cosplay things in time for EOY which is on 26 December 2009, Boxing Day. It's a new organizer this year, so let's see how different things are. The tickets for one, need to be improve. -_______-''''''''

So probably not much deviations until after 26 December 2009. But definitely a flood of KH doodles I did during these three months of school. ^_^

P.S. Does anyone know of a good place in Singapore to do badges or magnets? And also T- Shirts?

Stupid semester

Tue Dec 8, 2009, 6:01 PM
I don't know whether to love or hate this semester.

I got a job that I could work even when I'm at school. So for the moment, I'm quite financially free - free to print on whatever paper, buy strange materials to try, and printing outside. I'm saving up nicely to repay the tuition loan in the future too, provided the Graduation Show's budget isn't as much as I think.

I finally got my own computer - a 15" Macbook Pro that came bundled with Office Mac 2008 and Adobe CS 4 Web Premium Design.

That took a while for me to get used. I'm still getting used to using it. I'm STILL learning how to draw in bloody Illustrator. I don't have enough time to experiment and learn properly.

Out of foundation and into my Major's core modules. I missed foundation drawing - it's the only time where I can legitimately draw without getting bother by other people and things. My Major's core modules… I think it's quite disastrous. I don't like the professor for Typography and I think the feeling is mutual. Graphic Design is a lot better. He teaches us some production stuff too. But after every assignment, I feel very bad towards him since I did very little.

In my first year class, there were only like 5 ( including me) who came from a JC, plus Cherry from Taiwan. The rest of the class were from polytechnics and apparently had some kind of knowledge in Illustrator, Freehand, FinalCutPro and whatever, which placed the rest of us in immediate disadvantage.

I have to question the school's aim. Everyone had to get in with a portfolio, a 3 min presentation and 500 word essay. We are suppose to learn in the university. But with these kind of hidden experts pushing up the bar - I really wonder why the school even bother considering the A Levels students. You can tell the professors' bias towards some of these people. ADM might as well go independent and become a design training institute.

The only thing I was happy with was getting a A+ for foundation drawing without even trying. Even with a bad presentation and idea, I still got A+ based on class work. And I don't draw like Xin Li or Andre, drawing realistic stuff. I draw in manga style - which I see is still pretty much look down by most people.

I think I might go take the Advanced Figure Drawing module or Figurative Painting next semester. I haven't got enough time for myself to draw something like Choosing to Let Go or A Conspiracy. I miss doing traditional stuff.

I don't like solving other people's problems. But they like to come to me, as though I'm the expert in everything under the sun. Excuse me, you are using my time to solve something that is easily settled when you push your brain a little more.

Stop asking me English pronunciation when there's such a thing as online dictionaries. And I'm not a bloody English teacher or grammarian - go check your English with someone else.

No wonder I'm getting pragmatic.

I wonder a lot these days, whether what I have chosen was right.

Lots of deadlines

Sat Oct 17, 2009, 4:51 PM
What happened this two weeks:

I got a B+ for Craft of Writing assignment ( : / I rewrote my piece like 4 times? … )

I got a A- for Indian Art exam paper. ( Studied like only 2 nights before. Ha.)

I got 20/25 for History of Graphic Design pop quiz. ( Totally didn't study any. XD )

I got to play 358/2 days and finally reached Day 300. (I know, I'm slow. I spent ages reading the Japanese text.)

Nice.

I am aiming for better grades for the final exams ( there isn't any for CoW though. :D ).

Next week's Graphic Design class is a field trip to Sungei Buloh for the final project.

Next Tuesday is another History of Graphic Design pop quiz again. :(

Next Thursday is Chinese Art History exam. : ((

Next Friday is the deadline for CoW's Assignment 2. : (((

Exhibition brief and invitation are due on 3 November.

Japanese listening test and oral are on 9 November.

Graphic Design final project presentation is on 11 November.

Italian Music through the Ages concert is on 15 November. I still haven't designed the layout for the program notes. Oh dear.

For cosplay, Namine's drawings have stagnated again. -__- But I found a better working method: spend approx. 15 minutes on a drawing everyday. The thing is: I spent this week on a drawing in the wrong colour scheme. >: ( Will try to do a new one in a correct colour and finish one more simpler drawing by this weekend since Monday is a school holiday (because of Deepavali). Seriously, I should get the sandals done too. All they need are just stars!!! -____-

Then after the examinations, I will continue work on the Kingdom Key for Roxas. The parts are cut out already. I just need to either cut/sand flat surfaces into round surfaces; or glue them together with some miracle superglue. Then paint. -__________-

Well, I did had the intention to load up more stuff this week since I was on a week break from work. And no, my week got ruined. Read here if you want to know.

EOY 2009

Side note: EOY (AKA End of Year event ) is one of the two long standing Singapore's cosplay conventions that see artists and fan artists set up booths to sell their work. The other one is Cosfest. I have seen newer events these few years for more options like SOY (AKA Start of Year event ), STGCC (SIngapore Toys Games Comics Convention ) and AFA (Anime Festival Asia ).

The price to rent a booth at EOY is out: it's $45. O.O A lot more expensive than previous years. I know there's a change in venue and time, but $45 for a booth? Even artwork booth ( for display only) is $20!!!! I wonder whether booths at overseas CONs are so high. If the price is for people selling anime and manga, I guess it's all right. But for unknown art doodlers like me, it's a risky investment. Sure, you will get exposure, but at the end of the day, the earnings might not cover the rent and printing cost. :( sylenthermit09 and I are discussing whether to go ahead with our plans or we should wait for the SOY event.

Meanwhile, dear watchers, do you think we should go for it? Given my gallery of manga works ( I don't think we can sell photographic works) ? I've been told people would buy coloured prints but I was thinking that with black and white prints, we could sell them cheaper and more people could afford to buy them.
