Lots of deadlines

Sat Oct 17, 2009, 4:51 PM
What happened this two weeks:

I got a B+ for Craft of Writing assignment ( : / I rewrote my piece like 4 times? … )

I got a A- for Indian Art exam paper. ( Studied like only 2 nights before. Ha.)

I got 20/25 for History of Graphic Design pop quiz. ( Totally didn't study any. XD )

I got to play 358/2 days and finally reached Day 300. (I know, I'm slow. I spent ages reading the Japanese text.)

Nice.

I am aiming for better grades for the final exams ( there isn't any for CoW though. :D ).

Next week's Graphic Design class is a field trip to Sungei Buloh for the final project.

Next Tuesday is another History of Graphic Design pop quiz again. :(

Next Thursday is Chinese Art History exam. : ((

Next Friday is the deadline for CoW's Assignment 2. : (((

Exhibition brief and invitation are due on 3 November.

Japanese listening test and oral are on 9 November.

Graphic Design final project presentation is on 11 November.

Italian Music through the Ages concert is on 15 November. I still haven't designed the layout for the program notes. Oh dear.

For cosplay, Namine's drawings have stagnated again. -__- But I found a better working method: spend approx. 15 minutes on a drawing everyday. The thing is: I spent this week on a drawing in the wrong colour scheme. >: ( Will try to do a new one in a correct colour and finish one more simpler drawing by this weekend since Monday is a school holiday (because of Deepavali). Seriously, I should get the sandals done too. All they need are just stars!!! -____-

Then after the examinations, I will continue work on the Kingdom Key for Roxas. The parts are cut out already. I just need to either cut/sand flat surfaces into round surfaces; or glue them together with some miracle superglue. Then paint. -__________-

Well, I did had the intention to load up more stuff this week since I was on a week break from work. And no, my week got ruined. Read here if you want to know.

EOY 2009

Side note: EOY (AKA End of Year event ) is one of the two long standing Singapore's cosplay conventions that see artists and fan artists set up booths to sell their work. The other one is Cosfest. I have seen newer events these few years for more options like SOY (AKA Start of Year event ), STGCC (SIngapore Toys Games Comics Convention ) and AFA (Anime Festival Asia ).

The price to rent a booth at EOY is out: it's $45. O.O A lot more expensive than previous years. I know there's a change in venue and time, but $45 for a booth? Even artwork booth ( for display only) is $20!!!! I wonder whether booths at overseas CONs are so high. If the price is for people selling anime and manga, I guess it's all right. But for unknown art doodlers like me, it's a risky investment. Sure, you will get exposure, but at the end of the day, the earnings might not cover the rent and printing cost. :( sylenthermit09 and I are discussing whether to go ahead with our plans or we should wait for the SOY event.

Meanwhile, dear watchers, do you think we should go for it? Given my gallery of manga works ( I don't think we can sell photographic works) ? I've been told people would buy coloured prints but I was thinking that with black and white prints, we could sell them cheaper and more people could afford to buy them.

2nd Year for me

Mon Aug 17, 2009, 2:01 AM
New School Year

Well, I have started a new school year. And I'm working too.

So I'm a full time student AND employee.

Wow.

This means less time for me to draw, surf net, do homework and go to the library.

This means I can save more money to pay for the Tuition loan in the future.

Or spend it on cosplay and making merchandise to sell in local conventions.

'__'

Hm.

This month is a great spending month for me - I have to get a 15" Macbook Pro ( because Vis. Com. students need a decent screen size to do graphics ), a hard disc drive ( for backing up data because the family computer keeps shutting down for no apparent reason, despite reformation and stuff. Needless to say, I wasn't very pleased. And I think I know who's the idiotic user letting in all the viruses/ trojans/ proxies. ), a USB port ( because I always plug a lot of stuff into the PC and Mac only got 2 USB which is not enough. ) and maybe speakers ( because the ones at home died a long time ago and nobody bother to get them.) at the school's IT Fair or the COMEX IT fair during September.

At least my modules seem more interesting this semester. The professors for Typography and Graphic Design are cool. Craft of Writing looks fun. I was just bored by the first lecture of History of Graphic Design since I read about Pictograms, Cruneiforms and Hieroglyphs ( all 3 forms ) about a decade ago in primary school as side interest. I even read about Linear A and B that wasn't covered in the lecture.

The thing is we have to buy a book for that module. And it's not cheap. The module is only for one semester. I don't mind buying for Typography since there are 3 modules, but for one that only going to last a little more than 3 months? : (

I'm going to see whether any seniors are throwing out their books to sell at the school's bazaar.

Hm...... Oh yes.

A bunch of belated birthday wishes to be written here:

  • Happy Belated Birthday to Deviantart ~ It's a wonderful place to look at inspirational pieces. Though I am still confused whether your B day in on 6/8, 7/8 or 8/8.

  • Well this is ambiguous. I have seen someone stating Axel's birthday as 8/8 for the sole reason that he's no. VIII in the organisation which I think is plausible, but what about Roxas' birthday? There's only a thirteenth month in Chinese Lunar calendar about twice every 3 years and the month changes every time. This year, there a second 5th Lunar month. In any case, Happy Belated Birthday to you, Axel. Just try to go easy on Roxas, eh? XD But I do find it kinda creepy that this guy shares the same birthday as ......

  • Best wishes to my home, Singapore. May you continue to perserve and shine through this difficult period. :D

That's all for now. Sorry for writing such a long entry.

    Musing

    Thu Jul 30, 2009, 6:50 PM
    Musing about drawing

I haven't been drawing much of my own stuff, as in stuff that aren't fanart or digital drawing pratice.

And when I spend like 1 hour on a bust drawing with only neck shadows, I know I need to get back to drawing on paper very fast.

    Sigh.

When will I ever finish my old stuff if I keep doing new stuff? It's a viscious cycle.

Or I should learn to let go.

There must be some reason why I left some of the unfinished stuff untouched for months or even years.

I couldn't find the urge to finish them, I supposed. Yet I can't bear to let them remain like that.

    What a paradox. : /

    Musing about photography

I have been editing photographs in PSE since I lost my PS program when reformatting the PC.

Sometimes I wonder how much editing to do. Editing too much seems to miss the point of using the camera. Editing too little seems to belittle the potential in that photograph.

I know you should try to take a photograph as best as you can and minimise editing.

    But it's hard.

What you see is one thing and what your camera can capture can be another thing together.

Sometimes I edit the photographs like months after they were taken. By then, I might have fogotten what the original scene looked like and do the editing based on intuition.

Sometimes the photograph gives more zest in another colour scheme.

What I use is only a Nikon Coolpix 5600, the consumer camera and it was bought second hand.

And I'm trying to use it like a photographer's camera. Kinda dumb, huh?
